Small but Mighty
like friends, kids, and your vote
The “small but mighty” theme runs through my work. Kids are strong but mighty. So are friendships. And one small vote may be all that’s needed to tip the scales. How did I end up on the Statesman and Austin Monthly’s Best of ATX list of top five authors in Austin, Texas? One friend’s small and consistent actions. Meet Nicole DeFalcis.
We’ve been friends over twenty years and watched our girls grow up together. Last month she texted, asking if she could nominate me. “Of course, and thank you!” I texted back. She worked through some technical difficulties to get my name on the nominations list and then voted for me every single day(!). Those small actions mattered, and yours can, too.
TO VOTE, CLICK HERE.
I’m in the “People and Places” category, scroll down to find “Local Author.” You don’t have to live in Austin to vote, and you can vote once a day this month. When you go to vote, you’ll see all sorts of categories. Vote for the best queso in Austin, the best bookstore, the best dentist or hospice or community leader or DJ.
I don’t love marketing and making asks like this one isn’t easy, but it’s part of an author’s job. If I win, my books get into more kid’s hands, and that’s the goal. I wish I could look into the eyes of each reader and tell them, “you wouldn’t believe what I did to get to you. You are that important.”
So how about it? Wouldn’t it be cool if this long time Austinite (38 years!) and children’s book author who passionately loves her industry won the whole enchilada because a bunch of friends and family and subscribers pitched in to vote?
My friend Nicole also helped get the school where she works on the Best of ATX top five list. While you’re voting, check out the private school category under Kids and Education, and consider voting for City School. Their mission is to create a diverse Christian community that loves to learn and serve.
The Best of ATX contest is hosted by the Austin America Statesman and Austin Monthly, voting ends June 24th, winners will be announced end of August.

My family reunion where over forty cousins, aunts, uncles, and siblings gathered to play games and swim and catch up
My first s’more of the season, perfectly toasted (not blackened). I have a whole thing I do for s’more’s, prepping the graham cracker and chocolate so that I can come in piping hot with my marshmallow and get maximum squish.
My grandson’s quote after eating a very sticky s’more, “I’m using my fingers for a napkin . . . and my hair.”
My name is Meredith Davis, and I’m an award winning writer of middle grade books, a former indie bookseller, founder of the Austin chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and graduate of Vermont College of Fine Arts with an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults.
